What is Pilates?
The Pilates Method was developed in the 1920s by Joseph H. Pilates. It was originally used as a rehabilitation program for soldiers injured during the First World War. Pilates called his method Contrology because he believed the mind controlled the muscles. The Pilates Method is a series of movements that are performed on specifically designed clinical apparatus.
How does Pilates work?
Pilates encourages you to think about how you perform everyday movements. It heightens your body awareness which as a result improves your overall agility, flexibility and strength. When our muscles are weak they compensate for each other. This leads to instability and injury. For example, if you have bad posture, your lower back and hips will then adjust themselves accordingly which will position you out of neutral alignment.
Pilates aims to:
- Improve balance, core stability, flexibility & coordination without stress on your joints.
- Use low impact exercises - no wearing of the ligaments and cartilage surrounding the joints.
- Create a healthy flexible spine.
- Improve wellbeing.
- Rehabilitate after a fall or injury resulting in less stiffness and pain.
- Reduce stress.
- Increase blood flow and Oxygen intake - improved muscle function and less fatigue.
- Improve fitness levels.
Who can benefit from Pilates?
